Larger cruise ships often have more extensive medical facilities and may employ multiple nurses, while smaller ships may have fewer medical staff or may contract with outside medical providers. To be eligible for a nursing job on a cruise ship, you will typically need to have a valid nursing license from your home country or the country where the ship is registered. Additionally, experience in emergency medicine, primary care, or intensive care is highly desirable. Some cruise lines may also require nurses to have Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Cruise Ship Nurses are specialized nurses who have gained experience in the field. Not only do they serve as first responders during emergencies, but they perform patient assessments, assist doctors with clinical diagnosing, and administer medications or tests.

Another advantage of being a cruise ship nurse is that you can save a lot from your earnings. If you are wondering how a typical day goes for a cruise ship nurse, there are similarities and differences compared with their land-based counterparts. Whether you’re looking to get your pre-licensure degree or taking the next step in your career, the education you need could be more affordable than you think. As in-demand medical professionals, flight nurses can earn high salaries depending on their experience, location, and industry. Because many graduate-trained APRNs hold a broad practice authority that does not require a doctor’s supervision, they make a good fit for cruise line nursing. Depending on the cruise line, some nurses may have the option to bring family members aboard with them.

To effectively treat patients at sea, Cruise Ship Nurses must possess strong critical-thinking skills. They will need to quickly assess changes in the health status of each patient, determining when to take corrective action or consult their team. While shifts can run between hours, many Cruise Ship Nurses rotate with other medical staff, allowing them to have scheduled time off both on board and on land. Although RNs can enter nursing practice with a two-year ADN degree, employers generally hire nurses who have completed at least a bachelor degree. Most BSNs take between 2-4 years, depending on the type of program and number of credits transferred from previous college courses.

Nurses must also possess certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and have an active RN license. Qualified nurses who speak multiple languages such as Mandarin or Japanese are in high demand on cruise lines. You can also contact employment agencies that specialize in placing cruise ship medical personnel. Employers are particularly interested in hiring RNs with experience in emergency medicine, intensive care, or other acute care settings. Speaking a language in addition to English will boost your chances to land a position.

This benefit is sometimes conditional on length of service or limited to a specific number of days per contract. A cruise ship nurse can expect to work a 12-hour shift, and nurses rotate days off. However, if a serious problem occurs, you might be called upon on an off day to lend a hand.

You may also be involved in health promotion activities, such as presenting wellness seminars and coordinating vaccination programs. The first and most important step in becoming a cruise ship nurse is earning your Registered Nurse license. This involves completing an accredited nursing program, passing the NCLEX-RN exam, and submitting an application to your state Board of Nursing.

They assist the medical doctor, prepare treatment rooms, and administer prescribed medications and treatments. If your main priority is to make the highest salary possible, then you would want to go for a land-based nursing position. The cruise ship nursing position does have a slightly lower salary; however, the savings on your expenses could balance that out. Another disadvantage is that there are only a few jobs available in this line of work.

Cruise ship nurses work on a rotational schedule, which often involves working for a set number of days followed by a block of time off. It’s important to note that healthcare guidelines and protocols on cruise ships are continuously reviewed and updated to align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements. Cruise lines prioritize the health and safety of passengers and crew members, and these protocols play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and healthy onboard environment. It’s important to note that cruise ships have trained medical staff and resources to handle medical emergencies on board. However, in cases where specialized care or resources are required, arrangements may be made to transfer individuals to onshore medical facilities at the next port of call. So it is clear that land-based nurses earn more than their counterparts on the cruise ship.

On the Royal Caribbean cruise line, nurses are required to have at least 3 years’ experience in an emergency or intensive care unit (ICU) setting. An active nursing license in any state is also required as well as current ACLS and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications. Smaller cruise lines, such as Viking River Cruises, require only 2 years of nursing experience, yet hospitality and yachting experience is valued for the position. A work Visa will also be required when working as a nurse outside of the U.S. Cruise nurse salaries fall below the average annual income of $82,750 for all RNs reported by the U.S.

Having your own cabin allows you to have privacy and personal space to rest and recharge during your time off. The cabins are typically equipped with basic amenities such as a bed, storage space, a desk, and bathroom facilities, and as an officer, you receive cabin cleaning and laundry privileges. However, it’s important to note that cabin sizes and configurations can vary, and some cruise lines may have different policies regarding cabin arrangements for medical staff. The contract for cruise ship nurses is short when compared to other crew members.

However, Cruise Ship Nurses must also be aware of shipboard safety procedures.

In addition, salaries stretch further on cruise ships because lodging and food are often included with the job. Very experienced RNs may find staff positions on privately owned luxury yachts, meeting the healthcare needs of a small number of guests. While salaries tend to run higher than cruise ship nursing, nurses working on yachts may have to perform supplemental duties as stewards, housekeepers, or deckhands. Cruise ship nurses, like all RNs, must have basic life support certification as part of their training. Not all cruise lines require the advanced cardiovascular life support certification, but this credential and the pediatric advanced life support certification increase your job prospects. You need to pass a multiple-choice exam and fulfill practice requirements to get these certifications.

There are even some cruises where the nurses get to have four free meals each day on the cruise. You get to go and see different countries for free on your days off from work. Because of your included board and lodging, you will get an opportunity to save more of your earnings as a cruise ship nurse. When it comes to determining the salaries of nurses on cruise ships, several factors come into play. Understanding these factors can help give you a better idea of what to expect in terms of compensation in this unique work environment.

These registered nurses (RNs) provide healthcare for passengers and crew members. As the cruise industry rebounds from the shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for these nurses should continue to expand. Cruise ships carry hundreds or thousands of passengers at any given time. As such, they require the medical staff onboard to be prepared for emergency situations that may arise unexpectedly. Ideally, cruise lines prefer nurses who have experience working in emergency medicine settings such as hospitals or trauma centers. However, if this type of experience isn’t available to you, then showing that you are willing and able to learn emergency medicine skills quickly shows you’re flexible.

Cruise ship life is very exciting and visiting awesome locations around the world is just one of the many benefits of working on a cruise ship. If this is your first time going to work on a cruise ship, you might be wondering what you need to pack for a cruise ship contract. Average monthly salary ranges from $4,800 to $6,000, reflecting the leadership role they hold within the medical department.

Cruise Ship Nurses provide one-on-one medical care for guests or crew members on the ship. Typically, Cruise Ship Nurses are part of a small but efficient team who cares for everyone on the boat. Some of these nurses report directly to a ship physician and work under the supervision of the head nurse. Because Cruise Ship Nurses are often the first line of defense, some cruise lines prefer to hire RNs with emergency room experience. In addition, nurses who speak more than one language are in high demand on cruiseliners.

Once you have identified which companies offer positions as cruise ship nurses, it’s time to start preparing your resume. Make sure that all relevant information about your education and work experience is included in your resume so recruiters can get an accurate picture of who you are professionally. Many cruiseliners require certification in basic life support and sometimes advanced cardiac life support. Once you have these certifications, a BSN degree, an RN license, and experience in the field, you’re ready to pursue a career as a Cruise Ship Nurse.

Most cruise ships require RNs to complete at least two years of clinical experience after receiving their nursing degree. Some employers only hire nurses with two or more years experience in acute care and emergency care settings. If you have a passion for travel and meeting people from all over the world, a career as a cruise ship nurse may be just what you are looking for.

For instance, an average cruise ship holds about 3,000 guests, while some of the biggest ocean liners hold closer to 7,000 passengers. Yacht nursing is a lesser-known specialty that you may not be aware of but may be pleased to know exists. These nurses can travel almost anywhere, from the South Pacific to Hawaii, to the Caribbean. Because yachts are smaller and have less staff than cruise ships, in addition to providing medical care yacht nurses may also be asked to assist with other tasks such as service and maintenance.

While the decor is modern and stylish, done in a neutral palette, you won't find ultra-high-end touches like marble vanities, toiletries from fashionable brands or designer linens that are de rigueur on higher-end cruise lines. Across the fleet, you will find we go beyond the expectations of even the most well-traveled cruisers, with our top-tier crew, premiere service and world class amenities. Our ships, Azamara Journey®, Azamara Quest®, Azamara Pursuit®, and Azamara Onward℠, are perfectly sized to cross oceans, sail into intimate rivers, cruise along scenic waterways, and dock at locations bigger ships can’t reach. The ship itself is remarkable for its ability to dock in smaller ports that larger passenger ships can’t access.

The main dining room—where passengers enjoy the breakfast and lunch and daily dinner menu—are included in the cruise fare. All meals are held in two main restaurants, Discoveries and Windows Cafe. Breakfast is typically buffet-style at Windows Cafe with fresh fruit, cheeses and charcuterie, baked goods, pancakes, and a few different egg options. Buffet lunches are available, though a la carte options can be ordered at the Patio restaurant, which is part of the Windows Cafe. Lunch offerings don’t vary much from day to day, but the menu usually has sandwiches and wraps, salads, and some hot entrees. The a la carte menu at Discoveries does vary from day to day and is typically inspired by the various destinations the ship visits.

Plus, receive an onboard credit of up to $300 and only pay 50% of the required deposit up front (Club World, Ocean and Spa suites excluded). Guy and I sailed with Azamara Club Cruises last summer on their 7 night Greek Isles and Turkey cruise from Athens to Istanbul. I really felt the difference between travelling on a smaller ship with less than 700 guests, compared to the larger ships that take 3000+ passengers. The number of choices isn't as vast as what you'll find onboard ships from some of the larger, more mainstream cruise lines, but there's something -- from insides to lavish suites -- to fit every taste. In addition to soothing, natural decor, cruisers booked in these rooms can expect healthy snacks to be delivered daily. They can also enjoy in-cabin spa music and their very own glass-enclosed spa soaking bathtub.

They belong to the eight R-class ships that were built for Renaissance Cruises between 1997 and 2001. The Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey both entered service in 2000 under the original names R Six and R Seven. In March 2018, Adonia was also taken over from P&O Cruises and renamed Azamara Pursuit. In addition to the TV and the increased square footage, some Club Continent Suite bathrooms also have bathtubs instead of only a stand-up shower.

Discover the destination of your dreams and why cruising with Azamara is a unique and unparalleled experience. @Hels It's certainly worth understanding a bit more about the places you'll visit on a cruise and how long you'll get to look around. Like you the destination is the highlight for me and I want to spend as long as possible there.

The terms and conditions of your original booking will remain in effect following the acceptance of an Offer, including Azamara Circle Terms and Conditions. The best way for you to earn points quickly is to purchase the upgraded stateroom category in the original booking. At least one licensed physician and one nurse are generally in attendance on all Azamara® voyages. Limited medical services and medications are available for a fee. The medical facility is not intended as a clinic for guests, and Azamara is not responsible for the diagnosis, treatment or services furnished by shipboard medical personnel, who are independent contractors. Guests who require dialysis are welcome onboard all Azamara voyages.

The 2024-2025 Destination Guide

If you love to travel but are not sure if cruising is for you, I’d highly recommend Azamara for a first cruise. The experience is so personal and not at all overwhelming in the way some of the bigger ships can be. While the White Night Party was great fun, our AzAmazing evening at Ephesus was a truly magical event. On every cruise, Azamara offers a unique evening event that would be difficult to recreate on your own, and even better it’s included in your cruise. Our White Night Party was held in Patmos and the view of the sun setting over the island was magical as we sat on deck enjoying the warm night air.

Deck 10 is home to the Living Room with its comfortable lounge and bar area that doubles as a venue for live music and presentations. There's an adjacent wine-tasting bar offering for-a-fee tasting events with the ships sommeliers. Moving aft on this deck, you'll find the ship's library in the Drawing Room and Prime C and Aqualina, Azamara Quest's two specialty restaurants. Azamara also offers themed Explorer's Dinners for $65 per person, focusing on a different cuisine -- think French and Italian -- each time. For $95 per person, cruisers can enjoy a seven-course meal paired with wines. During the experience, the chef explains each dish, and the ship's onboard sommeliers go over the wine selections.

Guests can enjoy nights and cool places ashore, with insider access programmes and a unique AzAmazing evening included in each cruise. In most of the destinations you visit you’ll have time for a leisurely wander around the port of call. Just when all the other cruise ship guests are heading back to the ship you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon with less crowds. Other innovations will be part of the refurbishment, with new spa suites being created. These have a sea view from the bathroom and allow special access to the spa amenities included in the price of these staterooms.

We had a delicious mezze lunch on Patmos after looking around the sights of Chora. That’s why on some cruises you’ll find that you’ll have to be back on the ship by mid-afternoon having rushed around trying to see everything. Guests who are new to cruising are often concerned about what they need to pack for their cruise. While there are shops on board, it’s not as if you can easily pop out to find the outfit you need.
